MedTech BEST Pitch Final

MedTech BEST Pitch Final

Date: May 3, 2018 @ 5:00 PM

Location: Mechanical Engineering Lecture Theatre B

MedTech BEST provides training to undergraduates and PhDs on what might be required to take research into the marketplace (translation).  Participants learn about the skills, evidence, and regulations needed and the challenges likely to be encountered along this pathway.

The task is to develop a MedTech product concept to solve a verified clinical need. This concept, although hypothetical, has to be plausible and grounded in real science to address a real market. Over a 6 month period, teams first generated ideas for a technology and selected their lead idea(s) to take forward.  They also “built” a company formed to commercialise this product concept and developed a comprehensive business and technology case.

The competition (supported by RAEng) reaches its climax on Thursday 3 May (5-7.30pm) as teams pitch their proposals to a Dragon’s Den-type judging panel.  Our two teams and technologies this year are:

  • Chiron: Acute kidney injury early detection (Point of Care) device to reduce incidence of chronic renal failure , “Creatiread”
  • Hive Diagnostics: System for detection of antimicrobial resistance genes in bacteria to reduce risk of AMR when prescribing antibiotics, “MicroBee”.

Experienced judges are drawn from MedTech industry (Giles Proffitt, Marcus Orton), academia (Ruth Wilcox), investment/company governance (Raymond Wolfson) and Royal Academy of Engineering’s Enterprise Hub (Sarah Gummer).

Come to hear pitches and support the teams as they seek to convince the judges of how wonderful their product, company and team is ….and how they can’t afford to miss out on the opportunity!
